Step 1
** Cut down on portions **
Cut down on the number of portions that the caterer will be preparing for the wedding cake. Since the cake price is based on portions, the less portions, the cheaper the price of the cake. -
Step 2
** Use traditional wedding cake flavors **
Most caterers have standard wedding cake flavors that they sell for cheaper. If you want special flavors in wedding cakes you will usually need to pay for for these. If you really feel the need for a specific type of wedding cake (like a wedding cheese cake), you can have a small cake made of the special flavor and the rest just standard. -
Step 3
** Use fresh flowers and ribbons as wedding cake decorations **
Caterers may charge a lot of money for intricate wedding cake design made out of frosting, fondant or icing. Using ready made decorations such as flowers and ribbon can come out cheaper. -
Step 4
** Prepare a small wedding cake with a sheet cake to serve **
Keep your wedding cake small and prepare a large sheet cake which you cut up to serve all the guests. Sheet cakes can be much cheaper than wedding cakes. -
Step 5
Use cheap wedding cupcakes instead of a wedding cake -
You may be able to create a wedding cupcake display made up of cupcakes instead of an actually wedding cake. It might come out cheaper than buying a full wedding cake if you buy the cupcakes at a regular bakery instead of a specialty wedding cake caterer. Be careful with this though as a wedding caterer may charge a lot for wedding cup cakes. -
Step 6
** Use mock wedding cake
