How to Use a Zipper Foot on a Viking Designer SE
The Husqvarna company, officially known as VSM Group AB, has a long history. As the parent company of Viking sewing machine, the company was established in 1689 as an arms factory, later branching out to produce heaters, stoves and finally, sewing machines. More than 100 years of innovation are realized in today's sewing and embroidery machines, which are not only multitaskers, allowing sewing, embroidery and quilting functions, they also allow for maximum creativity while doing so. Simple tasks such as buttonholes and zippers are made easier, while complex tasks, such as embroidery and applique are made possible.

1
Change the needle and thread in the machine according to the manufacturer's directions.
-
2
Press the seam where the zipper will be located, known as the placket seam, closed, working on the inside of the fabric.
-
-
3
Baste the placket seam with long stitches, using the sewing machine's utility foot. Cut the basting seam at the bottom to make removing the thread easier after the zipper has been added.
-
4
Attach zipper foot "E" to the machine.
-
5
Pin the zipper to the placket, right side down, so the zipper opening lines up with the seam opening and the zipper tape is lined up with the edges of the placket. There will be excess zipper tape left at both the top and bottom of the zipper.
-
6
Open the zipper and, working from the bottom up, stitch the zipper to the fabric, following the seam allowance lines printed on the zipper tape.
-
7
Close the zipper and stitch the other side of the zipper to the fabric, working from the bottom up. Stitch across the bottom of the zipper after stitching the side.
-
8
Turn the fabric right side up and top stitch the zipper to the fabric. Cut the excess zipper tape at the top and bottom of the zipper. Cut the basting seams and remove the thread.

Tips & Warnings
Zippers are not difficult to add, they just take practice. The zipper foot allows the needle to get close to teeth, so make sure the open end of the foot is next to the edge.
If you are pressed for time, you can hand baste the stitches closed or just pin the opening closed and remove the pins while you sew in the zipper.
