Instructions

  1. The Tap Method

    • 1

Inspect the water level of the toilet. If the commode is too full to flush, you cannot use this method for unclogging the commode. If the toilet water is already up to the rim, opt for one of the other methods.

    • 2

Tap the bowl of the toilet with your foot several times while flushing the toilet once. Do not kick the toilet bowl but apply some force to the foot tap.

    • 3

Continue to tap your foot on the toilet bowl until the water goes down the commode smoothly. This may take a few minutes.

    • 4

Repeat this process if the commode is still clogged. It is best to perform this method at the first sign of a clogged commode. If, after a few attempts, the commode is still clogged, the blockage may be too large for this solution to work. Try an alternative method.

    The Plunger Method

    • 5

Plunge the commode to get rid of the clog. It is best to use a high-quality plunger as opposed to more inexpensive ones that are not as effective.

    • 6

Wipe the rim of the plunger with petroleum jelly. This will ensure a tight fit in the commode.

    • 7

Empty the excess water from the commode using a small bucket or something similar. You want only enough water in the commode to cover the head of the plunger.

    • 8

Place the plunger into the commode at an angle. This will ensure that no air is trapped under the plunger head.

    • 9

Pump the plunger up to 20 times, using force. Repeat this as many times as necessary to unclog the commode.

    The Snake Method

    • 10

Use a 6-foot snake to remove the clog. This is a spiraling piece of metal that can be purchased at most hardware or home improvement stores.

    • 11

Stick the snake into the hole in the toilet bowl. Push it down slowly as far as it will go. You may have to twist and turn it to get it all the way down the hole.

    • 12

Pull the snake slowly out of the hole. You may pull up whatever was clogging the commode, or the snake may push the clog through. Repeat this process as necessary until the clog has been cleared.
