How to Install an HDTV Wall Mount
One of the benefits of an HDTV--in addition to the better picture--is that they generally take up less space than a standard TV. Because of their smaller size and flat backs, they are also usually wall-mountable. Mounting an HDTV on a wall is a task that you can complete by yourself, but it will take some time and attention to detail.
Things You'll Need
- Wall mount with supplied hardware
- Flat-screen LCD or plasma TV
- Electric drill
- 3/16-inch drill bit
- Socket wrench
- Phillips screwdriver
- Pencil
- Stud sensor
Instructions
-
Connecting the Wall Plate
-
1
Use the pencil to mark the approximate height at which you want to mount your TV.
-
2
Use the stud sensor to find two adjacent studs that are at least 12 inches apart from each other.
-
-
3
Drill a 2.5-inch deep hole in each stud, making sure the holes are in the middle of the studs and are level with each other.
-
4
Place the flat side of the wall mount's wall plate against the wall, lining the predrilled holes up to the holes that are at the top of the wall plate.
-
5
Use the pencil to mark where the bottom holes will be. Make these marks in the holes along the bottom of the wall plate that line up with the holes you already drilled.
-
6
Drill a 2.5-inch deep hole on each of the marks you just made.
-
7
Place the wall plate against the wall with the flat side against the wall. Run the supplied 2.5-inch Lab Bolts through the supplied Lag Bolt Washers and the holes in the wall plate.
-
8
Use the socket wrench to insert the bolts into the wall and secure the wall plate.
Connecting Your TV
-
9
Select the correct hardware for your particular TV by threading bolts into the back of the TV by hand. Because wall mounts are compatible with multiple manufacturers, they come with a large variety of hardware.
-
10
Lean your TV against a wall and line up the monitor brackets--the long metal pieces--to the mounting holes on the back of the TV. Make sure the end of the bracket with all of the small holes is at the bottom of the TV.
-
11
Place the correct bolt through its corresponding lock washer, one of the larger washers and the monitor bracket into the holes on the TV. Tighten the bolts with your socket wrench.
-
12
Hang the monitor brackets--now connected to your TV--over the top of the wall plate; the top of the bracket has a notch cut into fit over the plate. Slowly lower the TV down so that the bottom of the brackets will rotate into place under the bottom of the wall plate.
-
13
Insert the safety bar into the bottom of the wall plate, below the monitor brackets. There is a notch cut into both of the brackets that will allow the bar to slide into both sides.
