While nothing will replace a grain grinder for wheat, small amounts of wheat can be ground into flour using a coffee grinder. Although you can grind only about a quarter-cup of wheat at a time, the coffee grinder will make quick work of grinding wheat berries into flour. You will need an electric coffee grinder for this process, as a manual grinder will not grind the berries fine enough to use as flour in recipes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Electric coffee grinder
  • Measuring cup
  • Wheat berries
  • Large bowl
  1. Step 1

Ensure the grinding cup of the coffee grinder is free of coffee grounds and dust. Either can alter the taste of the wheat flour.

  2. Step 2

Measure 1/4 cup of wheat berries and pour them into the grinder cup.

  3. Step 3

Place the lid on the grinder and press the power button.

  4. Step 4

Grind the wheat berries for 1 minute. Lift the lid and check the consistency of the grind. If the flour is fine enough, dump the flour into a bowl and grind the next 1/4 cup of berries. If not, place the lid back on the grinder and continue to grind for another 30 seconds to 1 minute.

  5. Step 5

Allow the grinder to rest for 10 minutes after you have ground a full cup of flour. This will keep the motor from overheating and possibly burning out.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can use the grinder to grind coarse wheat as an addition to breads, muffins and other baked goods. Simply grind for 30 to 45 seconds or until the desired coarseness is achieved.
  • Clean the grinder after use by rubbing the inside cup with a damp paper towel to remove any residue from the bowl.
  • You can use a manual coffee grinder for the wheat if you need coarse, not fine, flour.
