How to Change a Bag on a Kirby Tradition
The Kirby Tradition has a reputation as a long-lasting vacuum--many of the original models sold in 1979 are still in use today. The Tradition was the first Kirby model to use a disposable paper bag. When it was introduced, most vacuum manufacturers were already using disposable paper bags, although they have been phased out slowly in modern times. Changing the bag on your Kirby Tradition is fairly easy: the bag attaches to its post with retainer tabs and you can unhook them by twisting it. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Turn your Kirby off and unplug the power cord from the wall. Face the front of the vacuum and pull back the center tab to find the zipper. Pull down the zipper to open the outer bag.
-
2
Grab the top of the bag near the attachment cavity. Turn it a few inches counterclockwise to release the retainer tabs from the connection. Once the tabs are released, pull the bag straight out.

3
Handle the old bag carefully to avoid spilling dirt and dust. Dispose of the old bag.

4
Insert the new bag and align the bag's attachment cavity with the retainer tabs. You'll need to hold the bag at a slight angle to connect the tabs. Once they are connected, turn the bag clockwise to line it up straight.

Close the outer bag. To close the outer bag, raise the zipper to its highest position. Flip back the flap to cover the zipper.

Tips & Warnings
The front part of your bag has a blue line running across it. This is your maximum dirt line. Once the bag is filled to this point, you'll need to replace it; otherwise, air flow will be restricted.
