How to Remove Linoleum Adhesive on a Hardwood Floor
Linoleum is typically installed over hardwood floors by applying a thin layer of glue then laying down the linoleum. When it's time to remove the linoleum you must first pull up the linoleum from the floor then remove the remaining glue or adhesive. Boiling Water

Fill a dish pan 1/2 to 3/4 full of water and place it on the stove.

Turn the stove burner on high and wait for the water to come to a boil.

Place a towel or cloth over a section of the hardwood floor that has adhesive on it.

Pour the water on the towel until it is completely saturated.

Let the water set on the adhesive for about five minutes.

Scrape the adhesive with the scraper until the adhesive begins to come off of the wood.

Repeat this process to remove the adhesive from the rest of the floor.
Direct Heat

Find a small section of floor to work on, such as a corner or behind a door.

Plug a hair dryer into an electrical outlet and turn it on low.

Run the hair dryer over the adhesive for about three to five minutes or until the adhesive starts to become soft.

Scrape at the adhesive with a scraper until it begins to come off of the wood. Apply more heat as needed.

Move to another area and repeat this process to remove the adhesive from the hardwood floor.

Tips & Warnings
Most hair dryers have a setting for high and low.
Water can also be placed in a microwave to bring it to a boil.
A heat gun can be used in addition to a hair dryer.
Using too much heat can burn or warp the hardwood floor.
Boiling water can cause burns if spilled.
