How to Resolve Arthritis Pain for Dogs

Many dogs--especially large dogs--develop arthritis as they age. Arthritis is simply an inflammation of the dog's joints. While easy to understand, it causes pain and discomfort for your pet and can be difficult for dog guardians to watch. The good news is that there are many steps you can take with the help of your veterinarian to make your dog comfortable and to alleviate some of the pain associated with canine arthritis.

Things You'll Need

  • Pain medication prescribed by your veterinarian
  • Leash
  • Cushioned dog bed
  • Heating pad
  • Towel
  • Dog ramps

Instructions

    • 1

Discuss pain medication with your veterinarian and administer your dog's arthritis pain relief as directed by the doctor.

    • 2

Take your dog for walks a couple times a day. Be sure not to overdo it, but frequent exercise will keep your dog's joints working, prevent stiffness, help prevent weight gain and may alleviate some pain.

    • 3

Provide your dog with a cushioned bed on which to sleep. For large dogs, the bed should be at least a foot off the ground to allow the arthritic pet to easily access it.

    • 4

Provide your dog with warmth, which helps to alleviate pain associated with canine arthritis. A heating pad on its lowest setting and covered in a towel is a good way to deliver warmth.

    • 5

Install ramps that allow your dog to access the areas the pet once enjoyed spending time. These ramps might lead to the couch, your bed and the porch.

    • 6

Work with your veterinarian to develop a weight-loss plan or weight-maintenance plan for your dog. Many dogs with arthritis are overweight or gain weight as a result of their condition. Additional weight puts more pressure on dog's joints and increases the pain of arthritis.

Consider consulting with a holistic veterinarian. In addition to herbs, supplements, dietary changes and homeopathic treatment, the holistic practitioner can provide information about canine arthritis remedies such as acupuncture and chiropractic treatment.
