How to Use Evolution X for XBox

The Xbox game console is popular among enthusiasts who have learned how to modify its operating system by installing a special electronic chip. The "modded" Xbox can now accept special programs, such as EvolutionX that replace the console's main menu screen with one that can do a number of things more like that of a computer. The process of installing the EvolutionX program is somewhat involved, but can be done by just about anyone. Using the modified Xbox with EvolutionX will allow your Xbox to access the Internet, stream video and music from a computer connected to the network, vastly expanding your entertainment options.

  • Windows-based computer
  • Internet connection
  • Home network

Instructions

    • 1

Search on Google for the ISO file of EvolutionX and download it to the desktop of the computer.

Run the Nero 9 software program. Select "Recorder" from the main program's file menu and then select "Choose Recorder." Click on the name of the computer's DVD recordable drive and then click on "OK" to close the window.

    • 2

Insert a blank, recordable CD into the computer's recordable drive.

Go to "File" and then "Burn Image" on the main program's window. Navigate through the computer's hard drive to the desktop and highlight the EvolutionX ISO file.

    • 3

Click the "Open" button to go to the next window. Leave the "Write Speed" as is and select "Write" and the "Finalize CD" to start the DVD recordable drive burning the files to the CD.

    • 4

Quit the Nero 9 program. Go to "start," "MyComputer," "Devices" and right-click on the icon of the CD to eject it.

    • 5

Turn the Xbox on and insert the CD disc. Select the "System Utils" option when it appears on the screen. Select "Settings" and then scroll down to "IP" and write down the IP address of the Xbox on the home network.

    • 6

Download and install FlashFXP to the desktop of the computer (see link in Resources). Run the program and click the top button labeled "quick connect".

Fill in the IP address written down from the Xbox and enter "xbox" as the username and password in their respective columns. Click on "Apply" and then "Connect".

    • 7

Navigate to the "C" directory of the Xbox hard drive on the right side of the FlashFXP program. Highlight the "xboxdash.exe" file, right-click on it and select "Transfer as." Put "msxboxdash.xbe" in the open column and click on "OK."

Go to the left side of the FlashFXP program and highlight the "evox.ini" file. Open the file with the Notepad program and change the IP address to that which was written down.
Save the file so it has this new information.

Rename the "default.xbe" file that is also on the left side of the FlashFXP program to "xboxdash.xbe."

    • 8

Drag the "xboxdash.xbe" and the "evox.ini" files to the right side of the FlashFXP program and into the "C" drive of the Xbox hard drive. Click on "Yes" when the program asks to overwrite files.

Transfer the "msxboxdash.xbe" file to the right side of the FlashFXP program and into the "C" drive of the Xbox hard drive.

    • 9

Eject the CD and restart the Xbox. The Evolution Dashboard will now boot up as the default "Home Screen."

Tips & Warnings

  • A wired home network will work more efficiently for transferring files from the Internet to the Xbox.

  • Modifying an Xbox voids the warranty in the eyes of Microsoft. The company will not do a repair on it if it finds modifications have been made.
