Check your lamp or light fixture to see what wattage is needed. There should be a label on the fixture or on the incandescent bulb you're replacing.

Match the incandescent bulb wattage to the wattage of the CFL bulb you'll need to buy. Wattage comparisons can be found online.

Visit your local hardware or department store, or go online, and purchase a CFL bulb of the wattage you looked up. Make sure the package states that it is designed for a dimmer switch.

Remove the old bulb from the light and discard it.

Install the new CFL bulb. Be sure to hold the bulb by the base rather than by the glass when screwing it in to reduce chances of breakage.

Be sure to buy CFL bulbs that are marked for use with dimmer switches. Other CFL bulbs may not work properly or will have a reduced lifespan.
Dispose of your CFL bulbs in accordance with safety guidelines as they contain mercury and potentially harmful gases.
