How to Lubricate a Treadmill Belt

Over time, a treadmill belt can become worn, decreasing the performance of the machine. Lubricating the belt on a regular basis prolongs its effectiveness. Lubricate the belt every three months if you use the treadmill daily. If you don't use it regularly, lubricate the belt once or twice a year to keep it in peak condition. You can hire a repair specialist to lubricate it, but you also can do it yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your treadmill manual to see if the machine needs lubrication. Some treadmills, including most of the ProForm models, self-lubricate. If you have a treadmill like this, don't lubricate the belt.

    • 2

Purchase the lubricant recommended in the manual. Some treadmills require a thin-spray lubricant while others need a powder lubricant. You can find most lubricants on Amazon.com or in local fitness supply stores.

    • 3

Wipe down the treadmill deck with a soft cloth. Lift up the walking belt and wipe between the deck and the belt to remove dirt and debris.

    • 4

Lift the belt and apply the lubricant, according to the directions on the bottle. Spread the lubricant on the hard treadmill deck as well as the underside of the walking belt.

    • 5

Plug in the treadmill and run the machine at a speed of 2 to 3 mph for about five minutes. Refrain from standing or walking on the belt during this time. After five minutes, walk on the treadmill at this speed for an extra five minutes. This will spread the lubricant evenly across the deck and underside of the belt.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not to get lubricant on the top surface of the walking belt as it may cause you to slip during workouts.

  • Unplug the treadmill before doing maintenance on the machine.

  • Always use the right kind of lubricant on your treadmill belt. Using the wrong product can damage the machine beyond repair.
