How to Convert Mass Into BMI

Converting mass into BMI (body mass index) is an easy calculation. Referring to governmental BMI tables once you have converted mass into BMI will help you determine what your BMI score means. Doctors use BMI as a tool to indicate body fatness.

Instructions

  1. Convert mass to BMI

    • 1

Determine your weight in pounds and height in inches.

    • 2

Divide weight in pounds by height in inches squared.

    • 3

Multiply the result by a conversion factor of 703. This is your BMI.

    • 4

Determine BMI range on the CDC's BMI tables. A BMI of 18.5 or less represents an underweight person; a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is a normal range; BMIs between 25.0 and 29.9 represent an overweight score; and doctors consider BMIs of 30 and above as obese.
