How to Install a Bissell Bagless Vacuum Belt

The user-replaceable belt on Bissell vacuum cleaners rotates a roller with a series of brushes to scrub floor surfaces. These brushes, combined with suction power from the vacuum, help to efficiently remove dirt and debris. Over time, the belt can wear out and eventually break. Fortunately, you can replace the belt fairly easily in a few minutes. Consult your user manual for the correct part number to fit your model.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Replacement belt
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Verify that the vacuum cleaner is turned off. Unplug the power cord from the wall socket. Press the handle release button and lower the vacuum handle to the floor. Flip the vacuum upside down so that you can access the underside of the cleaner.

  2. Step 2

Examine the bottom plate that secures the brush roller in place. Depending on the model, the plate is held in place with tabs or screws that will need to be released or removed, respectively. Remove the bottom plate and set it aside.

  3. Step 3

Grasp both ends of the brush roller and lift it out of the vacuum cleaner. Slide the old belt off of one end of the roller and the other end of the belt from the motor pulley. If the belt is not readily visible, look beneath the brush roller and near the motor pulley for the old belt. Remove and discard the old belt.

  4. Step 4

Remove any hair or other debris from inside the vacuum cavity and from the brush roller.

  5. Step 5

Place the new belt around the motor pulley. Slide the brush roller through the belt and align the belt on the smooth area on the roller, between the bristles.

  6. Step 6

Pull the roller so that the belt is taut and insert the brush roller into the notches in the vacuum cavity. Rotate the roller to verify that the belt moves smoothly and doesn't bind.

  7. Step 7

Reinstall the bottom plate. Make sure that the tabs are aligned and install any screws that you removed. Turn the vacuum cleaner right-side up and power it on to test.
