How to Calculate Floor Tiles

Tiling a floor in a room of your house, such as the kitchen or bathroom, requires having enough of the tile on had to complete the project. When determining how much tile is needed to complete the project, it is important to remember to account for mistakes and waste. You can calculate the amount of floor tiles you need by first determining the amount of area to be covered with tile.

Things You'll Need:

• Tape measure
• Pencil
• Paper
• Calculator

1. Use the tape measure to measure the length and width of the room to tile.

2. Multiply the length by the width to find the room's square footage.

3. Multiply the square footage by 10 percent, or 0.10, to determine the additional amount for mistakes and waste.

4. Add this number to the square footage measurement for the total area to be covered by tile.

5. Divide this number by the square footage found on a carton of floor tiles to determine how many cartons of tile are required.

Tips & Warnings

• For uneven numbers, round up.
• You are better off having leftover tiles instead of running out before the project is finished.
• If you do not calculate properly for waste and mistakes, you may need to get more tile to complete the project.
