How to Become an Airforce Pilot

Air Force pilots are primarily responsible for the operation military aircraft. Military aircraft can be used in aerial combat or to deliver troops, weapons and military equipment to military operations anywhere in the world. Pilots for these aircraft must undergo specialized training in aerial warfare and dogfighting, or close range aerial combat. Becoming an Air Force pilot takes many years of training and education.

      Graduate high school. Try to choose topics that will help you succeed in a college ROTC programs, such as U.S. history and civics. If possible, join a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program if your high school has one.

      Attend a recognized university. Choose a college that has an ROTC program for the U.S. Air Force. As jet pilots are commissioned officers, you must be a college graduate to qualify and enter and complete Officer Training School. The ROTC program will allow you to combine going to college with officer training.

      Choose aviation or flying as your field when you receive your commission, after graduation.

      Complete Officer Training School after graduation. Do well during Officer Training School, as the jet pilot program is highly competitive. Remember that, even if you do successfully complete Officer Training School, there is no guarantee you will be chosen to fly jet aircraft.

      Attend and successfully complete flight school. Choose jets for your flight training. Again, strong performance is vital. Because of the strenuous nature of the training, you must be in good physical condition. Your sitting height has to be between 34 inches and 40 inches. You cannot have allergies, no history of asthma or hay fever after the age of 12 years and have perfect vision.

  • Air Force pilots must be in top physical condition to be able to handle the physical demands of flying. In particular, you will need to be in top cardiovascular health, maintain a healthy diet and engage in physical exercise on a regular basis. Furthermore, if you choose to attend the ROTC program, you might have to commit to eight years of military service.
