Whether you're cooking for one, two or an entire family, a juicy steak serves as the perfect, savory meal. Because one of the best ways to keep a steak fresh for an extended period of time is to put it in the freezer, defrosting steak is sometimes a necessity. Before pulling that delicious steak out of the freezer, take note of a few defrosting tips and tricks that will preserve the flavor and prevent any food-borne illnesses.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    Refrigerator Thawing

  1. Step 1

Remove your steak from the freezer, but do not unwrap it.

  2. Step 2

Place the still wrapped frozen steak on the bottom shelf of your refrigerator. The bottom shelf is usually the warmest.

  3. Step 3

Wait patiently for your steak to thaw. For steaks that are 1 inch thick, wait approximately eight to 12 hours. For steaks that are 2 inches thick, wait 16 to 24 hours.

  4. Cold Water Thawing

  5. Step 1

Pour cold tap water into a bowl that is large enough to hold the steak.

  6. Step 2

Take the steak out of the freezer and do not remove it from its package.

  7. Step 3

Put the wrapped steak in the bowl of cold water.

  8. Step 4

Change out the cold water every 30 minutes until your steak is completely thawed. For 1-inch-thick steaks, you'll need to continue for two to three hours. For 2-inch-thick steaks, continue for four to five hours.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never, under any circumstances, thaw your frozen steak by leaving it out at room temperature or by running hot water over it. This increases the likelihood of food-borne illnesses.
