How to Handle a Hyperactive Child

All children can be hyperactive at one time or another. Sometimes children are hyperactive because they are tired or have had too much excitement, but sometimes consistent hyperactivity indicates that children have a disorder like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. But certain strategies can help calm hyperactive children no matter what the situation.

Instructions

  1. Handling a Hyperactive Child

    • 1

Remain calm. If the hyperactive child knows that he's driving you crazy, he's only going to get crazier. If you start yelling or lecturing, she's only going to tune you out.

    • 2

Be firm. Sometimes hyperactive children, with their boundless energy, hope to wear their parents down by asking the same question over and over. Or they're so hyper that they don't notice normal cues to quiet down or stop an annoying behavior. You need to remain firm and not change your rules or expectations no matter how persistent your child is.

    • 3

Get active. Make sure that your child has time to be appropriately active each day. Take time to do a few jumping jacks or stretches as breaks during those times when you want your child to sit still.

    • 4

Teach self-calming. Help your child learn to take deep breaths, close his eyes and visualize a peaceful place. Suggest your child sing a soothing song or read a story to calm down.

    • 5

Reward positive behavior. Create a sticker chart for appropriate behavior and make sure to praise your child when she behaves appropriately.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to take a break when you feel yourself getting frustrated. Hyperactive children require a lot of energy, so give yourself plenty of time to recharge.

  • Talk to your pediatrician and your child's teacher if you are concerned about your child's hyperactivity. They can reassure you or order a comprehensive evaluation.
