Table tops for outdoor furniture are commonly made of glass as it resists decay caused by the elements and is easily cleaned. These table tops are most often made out of tempered glass, which resists breakage, but they can still be broken. When this happens, the best way to replace the table top is to order a new one from a glass store. There are steps you can take to make sure you obtain exactly what you want in the most economical manner possible.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure the frame of the broken table top to determine the exact size of glass needed to fit within the frame edges. It should be within one-eighth inch of each edge so that the glass will rest on the frame all around. If there is no frame and the glass sits on the legs, approximate the size of the broken glass and figure out the best fit by reviewing standard table top sizes available from the glass shop. Ordering a standard size will help reduce costs.

  2. Step 2

Determine the exact shape the glass should be to fit the frame. Standard shapes are rectangular, oval, round or square. If the table top is an odd shape, it may be best to trace the pattern on a piece of paper to be given to the glass shop to duplicate.

  3. Step 3

Measure the exact placement of any holes that may have been in the glass to fit an umbrella into the table top. This will need to be cut into the glass before it is tempered.

  4. Step 4

Decide the manner in which you would like the edge to be finished. This can be beveled, seamed, flat or rounded and can have textures, such as wavy, glossy, polished or satin.

  5. Step 5

Consider if there are any other options you might like, such as tinted or frosted glass. Various colors, such as bronze, gray or black, may be available.

  6. Step 6

Contact glass shops in your area or online to determine the best options in terms of price, delivery, and installation as glass can be very heavy and difficult to maneuver.

  7. Step 7

Use gloves and safety glasses if you are installing the glass onto the table top yourself. Handle with care as any bumps can cause stress even in tempered glass that can lead to eventual breakage, if it does not break immediately.
