How to Super Insulate a Hot Water Heater

Few people realize that insulating a hot water heater can save between 4 to 9 percent of the energy costs of heating hot water. Homeowners can quickly recoup the costs of insulating their hot water heaters. Basic insulation will allow homeowners to contribute to energy conservation and save money. Proper hot water heater insulation requires simple tools, materials and a little know-how. On all levels, it is well worth the investment. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Insulate an Electric Hot Water Heater

    • 1

Cut a square piece of insulation for the top of the water heater. Place it on the top of the water heater and leave openings for the pipes which come out of the top. Tape the insulating blanket to the top of the heater. (Insulation kits for hot water heaters are available at your utility company or at your local home improvement store.)

    • 2

Measure the water heater's circumference and cut a second piece of insulation of this length.

    • 3

Wrap the insulation around the circumference of the water heater and fasten it with the belts provided with the insulating blanket. Neither the blanket nor the belts should touch the access panels.

    • 4

Make sure that neither the temperature/pressure relief valve nor the overflow pipe on the side of the tank are covered. Uncover the four corners of the access pane as well as the rating/instruction plate.

    • 5

Place a piece of rigid insulating material under the water heater's tank.

    • 6

Check that the hot water heater is not set to a heat higher than 130 degrees F. This may cause the wiring to overheat.

Insulate a Gas Hot Water Heater

    • 7

Follow the instructions for insulating an electric hot water heater.

    • 8

Keep the insulation away from the bottom drain as well as the flue that sits at the top of the heater. Make sure that the airflow to the burner isn't covered.

    • 9

Make sure that the thermostat is not covered by the insulation. Do not place any insulation on the top of the tank.

Tips & Warnings

  • The flow of hot water into the pipes can also cause heat loss. Heat traps can stop the flow. One-way valves or loops of flexible pipe will do the trick. These can be purchased at a home improvement store where the staff will be able to explain how to install these devices.
