Home remedies are just as effective in cleaning showers as commercial products.

These are just as effective and sometimes work better than commercially prepared cleaners. They are ideal for people on a tight budget or those who want to avoid using harsh chemicals while house cleaning.

Baking Soda Method

Sprinkle baking soda onto a damp sponge. You can find this on the aisle with the baking goods. It is mildly abrasive, but will not scratch your surfaces. Wipe it onto all the shower surfaces, using more of an effort if there are stubborn stains. After scrubbing the area, rinse the shower well.

Inexpensive Shampoo Method

Pour some inexpensive shampoo onto a scrubbing brush, as suggested by Heloise.com. These type shampoos are effective in removing dirt and oil from your hair and work well in removing soap scum buildup in your shower. Just add a bit of water to the brush and scrub all areas of your shower with it. Rinse the area well, by turning the shower on or using a plastic tea pitcher to pour water down the sides of the shower.

Vinegar Method

Apply full strength white vinegar to a sponge. Vinegar is a natural disinfectant, according to the Natural Healthy Home Cleaning Tips website. Clean the shower area by rubbing the vinegar over the shower walls and floors. There is no need to rinse the solution. The odor of the vinegar will dissipate in about 15 to 20 minutes and your shower will be sparkling clean and fresh smelling.

Attack any hard water spots or stains by saturating a sponge with white vinegar and let it sit on any hard-to-remove stains or hard water spots for five minutes. Rinse the area and the stain should disappear.

Hydrogen Peroxide Method

Shower walls made of ceramic tile tend to have mold growth. You can make an effective mold cleaner by mixing 1 part of hydrogen peroxide and 2 parts water, as suggested by Eartheasy.com. Mix the solution in a clean spray bottle and spritz the mold area thoroughly. Leave the mixture on the shower tiles for one hour and then rinse well.
