How to Install Sink Mounted on Top of Countertop

Installing a countertop sink is typically done when a new counter is being installed in a kitchen or in a bathroom. Most countertop sinks are self-rimming and have a drop-in bowl that is inserted into a hole that has been cut out of the top of the counter. Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the countertop with a tape measure to determine where the sink is going to set. Make sure the sink is centered from front to back and side to side.

    • 2

Draw an outline for the sink on the countertop with a pencil. You can use a template, if one is included with the sink. Place the template on the counter and trace around it with a pencil. Alternatively, you can place the sink upside down on the counter and trace around it with a pencil. You will then need to draw another line ½ inch inside the first outline line for the actual cut line.

    • 3

Drill a starter hole in the counter with a power drill inside the second outline near the pencil mark.

    • 4

Insert a saber saw into the hole and begin cutting around the pencil line.

    • 5

Run a bead of silicone adhesive along the underside of the lip of the sink. This is the part of the sink that will sit on the counter.

    • 6

Place the sink inside the hole and press around the edge to make a tight seal between the sink and the counter.

    • 7

Run a bead of caulk around the outside edge of the sink and smooth it out with your finger to complete the installation.

Tips & Warnings

  • Drop-in sinks are the easiest type of sink to install in a counter.

  • Tracing around the sink and cutting the outline without making a smaller outline on the inside will leave you with a hole in the counter that is too big for the sink.
