How to Cut Dead Palm Fronds on a House Plant

Palm trees make beautiful houseplants. They provide fresh air, increase humidity and add green to any room. Indoor palms need little maintenance and almost no pruning. However, they do benefit from having dead or dying fronds regularly removed. Palms may lose fronds when they grow, as they adjust to their indoor environments or due to disease. It is crucial to use the proper tools when removing dead fronds as to not further damage or stress the plant. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the tools required. Depending on the size of your palm, you may need scissors, shears, loppers or a hand saw. Using the correct size tool is important in preventing any damage to the palm.

    • 2

Pour boiling water over the blade. No matter what type of cutting tool you use, you must thoroughly clean the blades to avoid spreading disease.

    • 3

Sharpen your shears. Take a few minutes to sharpen your blade in order to make a smooth, even cut.

    • 4

Cut the dead frond at the base of the stem. Use a steady motion to smoothly cut through the stem without cutting the bark.

    • 5

Dispose of dead fronds immediately in order to prevent the spread of disease.

Tips & Warnings

  • To maintain old growth, remove new shoots that grow from the base of the palm.

  • Look for abnormal spots on dead fronds to determine if your plant has a fungus.
