How to Accelerate Stumps to Rot

Often when a tree gets old and dies, or gets too large and too close to your house, power lines or garage, it must be removed. But big trees leave big stumps, which can get in the way of your plans for all of that yard space you've just reclaimed. In the past, various companies have tried to sell chemical formulas to accelerate the natural decomposition of tree stumps, but research conducted by Gary W. Hickman and Ed Perry of the University of California (see Reference 1) proved that these so-called "stump removers" were ineffectual. However, there is an easy non-toxic way to accelerate the decay of stumps. Does this Spark an idea?

    • 2

Place potting soil in the holes.

    • 3
