1
Inspect for mold on floors and walls of the basement. Check for stains with a yellowish tint. Yellowish stains come from moisture and can indicate mold has already begun to form. Mold can grow on virtually any surface. Check for mold on such items as furniture, pipes and appliances. Be aware that mold has many different appearances and colors.

2
Check for musty (or mildewy) odors. Mold has a distinctive smell. Look for mold if you smell a musty odor. Find out if these odors are only present when air conditioning or heating units are in operation. It's possible mold has formed in these systems.

Be aware if someone develops respiratory problems when in the building. Such problems can be signs of mold formation. Ask the person if these symptoms only occur when in the building.

4
Be aware of signs of mold poisoning. Mold produces volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Exposure to VOCs can cause poisoning. Signs of poisoning can include nausea, coughing, breathing problems, headaches and dizziness.

Check for mold with a mold-testing kit. You can purchase testing kits online (See Resources). Many hardware stores also have mold-testing kits.
