How to Antique Kitchen Cupboards
Whether you have old outdated melamine cupboards, or just want to refresh the look of your kitchen; an antique paint effect is easy to do on kitchen cupboards and can completely transform the look and feel of your kitchen. - Screwdriver
- Fine grade sandpaper
- Cotton cloth
- Primer
- Paint (2 colors)
- Paint roller
- 2-inch, 3-inch, or 4-inch paint brushes
- Wood stain
- Clear glaze
- Old cloth or T-shirt

Remove any hardware from the cupboards, including hinges.

Sand the fronts of the cupboards with fine-grade sandpaper, making sure to sand all areas that you want to cover with paint.

Remove dust from the sandpaper with a clean cotton cloth.

Apply one coat of primer to the cupboards using a paint roller. Allow to dry completely.

Apply your first coat of paint with your choice of brush using long strokes. This coat of paint is the base coat and will only marginally show through the finished design. Allow to dry completely.

Apply the second coat of paint using brush of your choice, using long strokes. This is the paint color that will show to the room. Allow to dry completely.

Sand the edges and random areas of the cupboards to create a weathered and antique look.

Remove dust from the sanding with a clean, cotton cloth.

Mix equal parts of wood stain and clear sealer together. Apply a single layer of this mixture over the paint with an old T-shirt or cloth. This gives the final finished antique look. Allow to dry completely.

Re-attach all hardware with the screwdriver and replace cupboards into their original positions.
