An easy-to-grow, richly textured potted plant, Boston ferns grace any room in the house, whether the décor is contemporary or traditional. How to Care for a Potted Boston Fern
-
1
From a nursery, select a healthy looking plant that is a deep green, has even growth on all sides, shows few dried fronds, and has no sign of yellowing. If the pot is visually acceptable, there is no need to re-pot the plant. Otherwise, re-pot the fern into a lightweight pot that is more shallow than deep.

2
Locate the Boston fern where it will get even, indirect light, away from indoor heat vents or drafts from doors. Ideally, the location should be kept under 80 degrees year round.

3
Keep the Boston fern well hydrated, watering it once or twice a week, depending on the indoor humidity level. Put the water on the fern twice, allowing it to drain both times. A good way to water it is to place it in the shower or sink where it can get an even sprinkle and can drain freely. Use bottled water once a month to flush salts. In addition to regular watering, spray the fern every two to three days with a light mister. Boston ferns thrive on humidity.

4
Regularly trim dry, broken or yellow fronds with a sharp scissors to promote new growth and to maintain the Boston fern's graceful shape. Fronds uncurl directly from the soil, so the fern should never get "leggy."
