How to Make Suet & Birdseed

You can purchase suet at stores, but why purchase it when you can easily make it at home? With a few simple ingredients, you can learn how to make suet and birdseed so birds in your yard stay fed and warm throughout the snowy days of winter.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the shortening in the saucepan and begin to melt it over low heat.

    • 2

Mix in the peanut butter once the shortening has melted. Stir them together until the peanut butter has completely melted as well.

    • 3

Put in the flour and cornmeal and use the wooden spoon to fully integrate the newly added ingredients into the peanut butter and shortening mixture.

    • 4

Add a handful of the birdseed--this will make the suet a bit more crunchy and wholesome for the birds.

    • 5

Pour the mixture into the ungreased bread pan and place it in the refrigerator for a few hours to allow it to harden.

    • 6

Remove the pan from the refrigerator and cut the suet into slices that are approximately two inches thick. These slices should fit into your suet holder.

Tips & Warnings

  • Store your leftover suet in the refrigerator until you put it out for the birds.

  • You can also make a homemade suet holder with a few pieces of wood, hardware cloth and a piece of string. Then you can hang several suet cakes around your yard.

  • Try using rolled oats, sunflowers seeds, raisins, bread crumbs or other seeds in place of the birdseed. Using different ingredients might change the consistency of the final product, so be mindful of how much you add.
