Datura inoxia is a plant that is classified as a noxious weed by the USDA. It is in the solanaceae family of plants which include Deadly Nightshade and Jimson Weed. Some of the common names for this plant are pricklyburr, angels trumpet and desert thornapple. Killing Datura inoxia is important as it poses a hazard to children, pets and livestock. The plant contains toxins. If ingested, Datura inoxia produces narcotic-like effects. Ingestion can result in death. Total eradication of Datura inoxia requires diligence and patience as it is spread by seed. It can regrow from stem pieces or root segments left in the ground.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Garden spade or shovel
  • Garden stakes
  • Plastic sheeting
  • Premixed broad spectrum herbicide, such as Roundup
  • Chemical resistant gloves
  • Protective mask
  1. Step 1

Mark the area where the Datura inoxia are growing with garden stakes or plant markers.

  2. Step 2

Cover any desirable garden plants and nearby lawn areas that you want to protect from possible herbicide contamination with plastic sheeting. A broad spectrum herbicide will kill lawns and garden plants.

  3. Step 3

Spray the Datura inoxia plant with the herbicide using the spray bottle. Wear gloves and mask for this process and completely cover all leaves and stems of the plant with the herbicide. Read all precautions on the herbicide label prior to use. Take care to ensure all parts of the leaves are covered, even the underside. This step may have to be repeated.

  4. Step 4

Dig up all dead Datura inoxia plants with a garden spade after the herbicide application. It takes about three to four days for death to occur. Be sure that all roots and plant parts are removed. This step may have to be repeated.

  5. Step 5

Dispose of the dead plants by putting them in the garbage. Do not put them in a compost pile and do not burn them.

  6. Step 6

Cover the area infested with Datura inoxia with plastic sheeting. Keep the plastic sheeting in place for at least one year. Secure sheeting with garden stakes. This will prevent any Datura inoxia seeds remaining in the soil from germinating and growing into plants.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not spray on a windy day or if rain is predicted in the next 24 hours.
  • Do not use a broad spectrum herbicide on or near edible plants. Dig up invading Datura inoxia in the vegetable garden instead.
