How to Prep & Clear Coat Chrome Rims

Though it is not commonly done, it is possible to apply a clear coat over chrome. By nature, chrome provides a protective surface to whatever it is applied to, so it doesn't need a clear coat. If, however, you decide to clear coat a set of chrome wheels, the process is relatively easy.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the wheels from the car, if they are installed.

    • 2

Remove the tires, if they are still mounted on the wheels. This step is optional, but you will get a better result if there are no tires on the car.

    • 3

Clean the wheels with a wheel cleaner. Clean the back of the wheels as well to avoid getting any dirt or dust on the clear coat during the painting process.

    • 4

Tape off any area you do not want the clear coat to go. It is not recommended to paint the areas inside the lug holes, as this may prevent the wheels from being properly tightened.

    • 5

Clean the wheels with mineral spirits to remove any oil and residue. This is a crucial step, so make sure the wheels are thoroughly cleaned.

    • 6

Apply a light dusting of clear coat to the wheels and allow it to dry.

    • 7

Apply two to four coats of clear, allowing it to dry between coats. Do not apply the paint too heavily to avoid running and sagging paint.

    • 8

Allow the clear coat to dry overnight before reinstalling the tires or putting the wheels back on the car.
