Instructions

    • 1

Make the base for the pennant by using a 12-by-18-inch piece of fun foam in one of the team's colors. Use a ruler and pencil to make a mark halfway across one of the 12-inch-long sides. Create the pennant triangle by using scissors to cut a diagonal line from the pencil mark to each of the corners on the opposite 12-inch side.

    • 2

Create the letters for the kids' sports pennant by using a pencil to trace letter stencils onto fun foam or card stock in the team color that contrasts with the pennant base. Choose the largest letter stencil size that will still allow you to fit the team's name across the pennant in a single row. Cut the letters out with scissors and affix them to the banner with double-sided tape.

    • 3

Embellish the decorative sports banner with sport- and team-related accents. When creating a pennant for your child's soccer team, for example, include stickers of soccer balls and trophies and use double-stick tape to add pictures of your child in uniform. If you're making a banner for a professional team, add stickers of the team logo or attach trading cards of favorite players with double-sided tape.

    • 4

Design a border for the pennant by applying a line of glitter glue around the outside of the triangle or using colorful markers to draw a whimsical design. You can also use embroidery floss to add a simple running stitch around the border by moving the needle up and down through the foam along the edge of the banner.

    • 5

Affix three strips of magnetic tape adhesive if you want to display the handmade sports pennant on the refrigerator or three strips of temporary adhesive if you want to hang it on a wall. To wave the pennant like a flag, use scissors to make a one-inch, horizontal slit two inches down from the upper-left corner of the banner and a one-inch, horizontal slit two inches up from the bottom-left corner. Push a blunt wood dowel in through the slit at the bottom and out through the slit at the top.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have fun foam available, create the sports pennant out of card stock, poster board or chipboard instead. To create a fabric banner, measure and cut the long triangle, apply spray adhesive to the back of the fabric and affix it to a piece of poster board for stability. Use sharp scissors to cut around the triangle so the poster board doesn't show.
