How to Measure a Room For a Sofa Sleeper
A sleeper sofa contains a hidden mattress and frame that folds out into a bed. Measuring your room to verify it can accommodate a sleeper sofa involves measuring the space for the sofa plus the mattress and frame. You must also plan for moving the sleeper sofa into your room as the doors and hallways leading to your room must be large enough to allow for the passage of the sleeper sofa. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Obtain the dimensions of the sleeper sofa you want to place in your room, and choose the location you would like the sleeper sofa to sit in your room.
-
2
Measure the length of the sofa on your tape measure, and place the extended tape measure where you want the back edge of the sofa to sit. Run a piece of tape on the floor next to the tape measure that corresponds to the length you have measured. If you are placing the sofa up against a wall, place the tape six to eight inches away from the wall to allow for the pitch of the back of the sofa.
-
-
3
Measure the depth of the sofa on your tape measure, and place two pieces of tape corresponding to this measurement extending from each end of the tape, representing the length of the sofa.
-
4
Connect the two sides of the depth so you have the outline of a rectangle on the floor. This is the amount of floor space your sofa will take up when the sleeper mechanism isn't pulled out.
-
5
Measure the height of the sleeper sofa, and plot this on the wall on which you are placing the sofa. This is especially important if you have windows on this wall as you will want to determine if they are clear of the back of the sofa.
-
6
Review the measurements of the sleeper mechanism of the sofa, and plot these on the floor with the tape. You should now have one rectangle in tape that corresponds to the sofa and another rectangle of tape that corresponds to the sleeper mechanism.
-
7
Observe how much space is left in the room. Is there enough room to get out of the bed? Will you be able to pull out the sofa bed without having to move other pieces of furniture?

Tips & Warnings
You can remove the sleeper mechanism and mattress from the sofa to allow for easier moving. Delivery personnel will generally move the sofa this way and install the mechanism and mattress when the sofa is in place in the room. If you are moving the sleeper sofa yourself, ask how to do this.
Just because your room can accommodate a sleeper sofa doesn't mean your doorway or hallways will allow a sleeper sofa into the room. Always measure the height and width of your doorways and hallways to make sure you can carry the sleeper sofa into your room.
If you live in a building with an elevator, measure the height inside the elevator. Some elevators are too short to accommodate a sofa, and the sofa will have to be carried up through the stairs. If you are having the sofa delivered, this may result in an extra charge and require additional movers. If you are moving the sofa yourself, keep extra helpers on hand to assist you in carrying the sofa up the stairs.
