How to Arrange Stereo Speakers

Stereo loudspeakers work in pairs to deliver an audio signal separated into left and right channels. However, in a home theater setup, the stereo speakers are supplemented by a center speaker, a subwoofer and rear surround speakers. This type of setup is known as a 5.1 home theater speaker system. Maximum sound quality requires careful placement of the speakers in the room to get the full benefit of the surround sound.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a pair of stereo speakers in the front of the room at least 10 feet apart for best stereo separation. For home theater setups, these front stereo speakers should be positioned on each side of the television.

    • 2

Set the rear surround speakers behind and slightly above the main viewing area, turning the speakers about 45 degrees toward the seats. Rear surround speakers can be wall mounted, placed on bookshelves or installed on floor stands.

    • 3

Place the center channel speaker above or below the television. The center speaker delivers most of the spoken dialog in movies and television programming, so it needs to be in line with the image.

Set the subwoofer somewhere in the room where it won't be underfoot. Subwoofers are often large, heavy, enclosed speaker boxes that deliver deep bass. Most models for home theater use have built-in amplifiers so as not to draw power from the main receiver. Because subs produce low-frequency omnidirectional sounds, the placement of this speaker is not as critical as the other speakers in the system. Bass from the sub will sound the same wherever it is placed in the room.
