How to Change a Charcoal Filter in a Range Hood

Modern range hoods often include charcoal filters.

Many newer range hoods have charcoal filters. These filters are specifically designed to control and remove odors. Charcoal filters do not replace the mesh filters on a range hood; instead, they work together with the mesh filters. Most manufacturers recommend replacing your charcoal filter at least once a year.

Instructions

1. Remove the metal filter to access the charcoal filter. Most mesh filters have tabs holding them in place; slide the tabs over and remove the filter.

2. Pull down the front-middle part of the charcoal filter. The filter will slip from the retaining tabs situated on the back. Dispose of the filter. It cannot be cleaned or reused. Some filters will have clamps. To remove these filters, press inward on the clamps until the filter comes free.

3. Clean the mesh filter thoroughly. The ideal time to clean the mesh filter is when you're replacing the charcoal filter. Clean it with warm water and a small amount of dishwashing detergent.

4. Install the new charcoal filter. Attach the filter by the rear, lining up the tabs and snapping the front part in place. If it has clamps or tabs in front, engage them to hold the new filter in place.

5. Wait for the mesh filter to dry, then insert it in place. Slide the tabs back over the filter to secure it.

Tips & Warnings

• Some mesh filters are not held in place by tabs. For these varieties, push the filter forward, then slide it back to remove it from its mount.

• Make sure you purchase a charcoal filter in the right size for your range hood. It's generally best to stick with factory replacements.
