How to Fold Towel Cake Slices

If you have attended a bridal shower recently, chances are you have probably already witnessed the inventive folding of a towel wedding cake. The decorative folding of a set of towels into the shape of a three-tiered cake has been on the rise in popular wedding culture. Similar to the diaper cake that makes frequent appearances at baby showers, these decorative cakes aim to practical gifts more exciting. A new bite sized version, the towel cake slice, is now available as an equally fetching hostess gift.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a cardboard cake template. With a ruler and pencil, draw onto the cardboard a triangle with a 6 inch base and two 3 ½ inch sides that will form the top of the cake slice. At both sides and the base, draw two-inch thick rectangles that will fold down to serve as the sides of the slice.

    • 2

Cut out the cardboard cake template with an exacto knife. Do not separate the rectangle shapes from the triangle, rather cut around the edges of the entire form.

    • 3

Fold the rectangles down perpendicular to the edges of the triangle.

    • 4

Fold a linen hand towel in half .

    • 5

Lay the cardboard template in the center of the towel with the pointed tip of the template pointing towards a towel corner. Face the towel towards you in a diamond pattern with the tip of the template facing downward.

    • 6

Fold the bottom of the towel over the tip of the template followed by the left side over the left edge of the template. Secure with straight pins.

    • 7

Pull the top of the towel into the template and follow with the right side. Carefully tuck the towel under itself along the edges of the triangle shape. Secure with straight pins.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wrap the completed cake slice with ribbon or top with embellishments.

  • Fill the cake slice with edible goodies after step 5.

  • Place each slice on a dessert plate for a sweet presentation.

  • If you prefer to use a cotton towel opt for a washcloth instead of a hand towel. The thickness of a cotton hand towel will not fold well for this project.
