Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the charcoal grill. Ignite the coals, and let them burn for 30 minutes.

    • 2

Remove the giblets and neck from the chicken. Trim away any excess fat.

    • 3

Rinse the outside and inside of the chicken. Pat the chicken dry with paper towels.

    • 4

Rub vegetable oil on the inside and outside of the chicken.

    • 5

Combine salt and pepper in a small bowl. Use your hands to rub the seasonings onto the outside and the inside cavity of the chicken.

    • 6

Empty half of the beer from the can.

    • 7

Rake the charcoal to one side of the grill. Ensure that the grill grates are clean and free of debris.

    • 8

Set the beer can on a flat surface. Separate the legs of the chicken, and place the chicken on top of the beer can. The beer can will insert into the cavity of the chicken, creating a tripod for the chicken to rest on while it grills.

    • 9

Close the lid of the charcoal grill. Grill the chicken for 1 hour. The chicken is finished cooking once it has an internal temperature of 165 degrees in the breast area and it reaches 180 degrees in the thighs.

    • 10

Remove the chicken from the grill carefully. Use tongs to hold the beer can because it will be very hot. Allow the chicken to cool for 10 minutes before cutting and serving the chicken. Discard the beer can and chicken carcass.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try basting the chicken with barbecue sauce instead of using a dry rub.

  • Some recipes suggest poking several small holes on the top of the beer can and adding the dry seasoning to the beer to add more flavor to the chicken.
