How to Replace an Ignition Key Lock Tumbler

An ignition key lock tumbler is the ignition switch and cylinder assembly that is secured to the steering column on most automobiles. The ignition key lock tumbler unlocks the ignition and allows the vehicle to be started. If it is getting difficult to turn the ignition key, or if it jams intermittently, you should consider replacing the ignition lock immediately, before the tumblers inside the lock completely fail.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the hole underneath the ignition key lock tumbler assembly. It will be directly under the lock and on the underside of the steering column.

Slide the pin punch into the hole under the ignition lock, and push up on the ignition key lock as far as you can. This will activate the release pin inside the steering column.

    • 3

Put the key into the ignition, and turn the key to the "II" position.

    • 4

Pull the ignition key lock tumbler assembly out of the steering column, and pull the pin punch out of the steering column.

    • 5

Insert the new key into the new ignition key lock tumbler assembly, and turn the key to the "II" position on the lock.

    • 6

Slide the ignition key lock tumbler into the steering column until it locks into the column housing, and turn the key to the "Off" position. Then remove the key.
