How to Grill a Plantain

Plantains are close relatives of bananas and are often mistaken for bananas due to their similar appearance. They are extremely versatile and can be used for anything from a savory entree to a sweet dessert. Like bananas, they start out green in color and slowly turn to brown. When they are green, they have a taste similar to a potato. As they start to turn brown, they get more and more sweet. Plantains can be baked, fried, grilled or cooked in any other way you could think of. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the plantains in half lengthwise with a sharp knife.

    • 2

Cut the pieces again crosswise. Each plantain should now be in four equal sections.

    • 3

Set the grill to medium heat. If using a charcoal grill, wait 10 minutes after the charcoal turns white to put the plantains on.

    • 4

Put the plantains on the grill with the peel face down. Let them cook for five to seven minutes, or until the peel starts to separate itself from the plantain on its own.

    • 5

Flip the plantains over and cook them for an additional three minutes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Spread butter and sprinkle brown sugar on the plantain before grilling for an extra sweet flavor.
