How to Detect Mold in the Bathroom

Bathrooms are one of the most common places for mold to form, because of the lack of air circulation and consistent moisture. This is especially true if you do not have any windows or a vent to leave on during and after a shower or bath. Mold can be very dangerous to your health, so the proper detection and removal are necessary. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the bathroom as a whole by looking in corners of the walls, and near baseboards and floors. Also look in the crevices of shower stalls. If you have a bathtub, check the corners of the tub near the caulking. Also look under the faucet and handle.

    • 2

Look for the actual mold. Most mold appears as dark green or black. It can be spotty in a contained area, or it can be in multiple parts of the room. If you have a bad mold problem, you will be able to distinguish mold from just dirt or soap scum. Mold also has a bad odor to it.

    • 3

Remove the mold. If the mold is in spotty parts of the room, a diluted bleach will remove it, especially in the shower area. Try putting the diluted bleach into a spray bottle, spray the mold directly and let it soak for several minutes. Take a coarse brush and scrub to remove. If you have a larger area of mold, you may want to consult with a mold professional because the source of the problem could be deeper into the walls.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider installing a vent fan if you do not currently have one in your bathroom, and keep the humidity out. This will help prevent the growth of future mold.

  • Never handle mold without nose, mouth, and hand protection. Mold spores can attach to the lining of your lungs and make you very sick.
