1
Buy a futon mattress cover. This will ensure your futon mattress stays protected. To clean, just remove the cover and wash it in the washing machine per the cover's washing instructions.
-
2
If you need to clean the mattress itself, because it got stained before you got the cover, or the dirt went through, then clean as follows: Mix a small spoonful of laundry detergent with some water in a large bowl. Take the sponge or hand towel and dunk it in the soapy water, then strain it well.

Scrub the spot on the mattress with the sponge or towel until you are satisfied with the result. Do not use a very wet sponge, though, as heavy moisture can lead to mold. Make sure to strain the sponge or towel until it is just damp before dabbing the mattress.
-
4
Rinse the sponge or towel in water and strain it well again, then scrub the futon with it once more to remove any soap residue.
-
5
Take the futon off the frame and lay it out to air dry, or use a hair dryer for faster drying. Be sure to dry it completely before placing it back on the frame.
-
6
Spray the frame with a cleaner appropriate for the material and wipe with a soft cloth or towel. Most futon frames are made of either wood or metal. Use a wood polisher for a wooden frame and a multiple-surface cleaner for a metal frame.

Tips & Warnings
It is a good idea to touch up a wooden frame periodically with a varnish. This will protect the wood and make it last longer.
Turn the mattress over every month or so to ensure even wear.
Lightly spray the futon mattress with an upholstery deodorizer and cleaner once a week or so to neutralize odors.
