Choose the proper pry bar. You can find a hefty, durable and secure pry bar at your local hardware or department store. The longer the pry bar, the less effort you will need to move the boulder.

Clear the space around the boulder. Make sure the spot is clean and free of obstructions such as branches or other landscaping rocks. The surface should be open to allow the boulder to pick up momentum, which will make the job easier.

Plan the direction for moving the boulder. For example, if you want it to end up next to a tree, stand behind the boulder, facing the tree.

Wedge two or three of the small stones under the boulder. You will have to force the rocks under the edge, but the gap created by small rocks will ease the entire process.

Place the pry bar under the boulder, between the stones. Shove the pry bar as far as it will go under the boulder.

Apply downward force on the pry bar as low to the ground as you can. Use proper lifting techniques. The downward lever movement of the pry bar will move the boulder forward.

Repeat the process to keep moving the boulder forward. If you need to move the boulder a longer distance, you will need to continue to wedge the stones and pry bar and continue to apply force until you have reached your destination.

Use a back brace to avoid a back injury. Be careful to apply force with your arms and back. Bend your knees properly, as if you were picking up a heavy box or lifting weights. Do not strain your muscles, as this may cause long-lasting damage.
