How to Repair a Soft Side Waterbed Mattress
Few things can ruin a peaceful night's sleep on a waterbed faster than a mattress that's lost some of its water or one that has an awful smell--both of which can be caused by a leaky mattress. Because of its zip-up cover, noticing a hole or a cut in a softside waterbed mattress can be hard to notice. If the hole is left unattended for too long, however, it can not only affect the feel of the bed, but it can also cause mildew and an odor that can absorb into the mattress and mattress cover. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
-
Find the Hole/Cut
-
1
Unzip the cover of your softside waterbed, and fold it back so that the mattress is exposed.
-
2
Use a dry towel to soak up any water that has leaked from the mattress into the vinyl safety liner.
-
-
3
Place paper towels around the perimeter of the bed between the mattress and the liner. The towels will absorb any water that has leaked and will help you find the hole or cut.
-
4
Lay on your mattress for a few minutes--occasionally moving around --to place pressure on the mattress.
-
5
Look at the paper towels to see which ones are wet; this is where the hole or cut is located. If the towels are dry, the hole is likely on top of the mattress. To locate holes on the top of the mattress, look for beads of water forming.
-
6
Use a marker to circle the hole so that you can easily locate it when you begin fixing the hole.
Fix the Hole/cut
-
7
Remove the cap and plug from your waterbed mattress, which are located at the foot of the bed.
-
8
Allow a small amount of air to enter the mattress--just enough to create a small air bubble. Push the bubble to the area that your mattress is leaking, and replace the cap and plug.
-
9
Dry the area around the hole with a towel.
-
10
Cut a small piece of vinyl from a vinyl repair kit. The patch should be slightly larger than the hole you're patching. Place glue from the repair kit on the patch, and place the patch directly over the hole. Allow the patch to rest for five hours before putting any pressure on it.
-
11
Remove the cap and plug, push the air bubble out of the opening and replace the cap and plug into the mattress.

Tips & Warnings
If the leak is in the seam, contact the retailer you purchased your bed from or the manufacturer for instructions; do not attempt to patch a seam leak.
