How to Unlock Your AT&T Cellphone
Your AT&T cellphone requires an unlock code for the subscriber identity module, or SIM card, if you wish to switch from AT&T to another wireless service provider. Unlocking your AT&T SIM allows you to take advantage of different payment plans that other providers offer, or to temporarily switch to another service provider while you are traveling. AT&T does not allow everyone to take advantage of this option; your account must fulfill certain requirements before the company will give you the unlock code.

Fulfill the requirements to unlock your AT&T cellphone. AT&T will only give you the unlock code if your account is active and in good standing. If AT&T manufactured your specific phone, you must have had service for at least six months, or be able to prove your purchase with a receipt. In some cases, you may obtain your unlock code if you ask AT&T for a temporary switch to another service provider while you are traveling to another country.

Follow the instructions AT&T gives you to unlock your phone. The procedure may vary, depending on exactly which phone you have. For example, you will likely need to confirm your IMEI, remove the old SIM card and insert a new one. Once you do this, the phone will prompt you to enter the SIM unlock code. After entering the code, press "OK" to confirm.
