If you have a problem with the silverfish bug, you don’t necessarily need to call an exterminator. You can do your own silverfish control at home. These little insects will eat certain things throughout the home. They thrive on pastes and glue which means they will eat book bindings, wallpaper, and other textiles. Silverfish can also get into boxed up food that is not properly sealed such as cereal or flour. A silverfish infestation can be a real nuisance. Here’s how to make silverfish control at home:

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

When treating a silverfish infestation, it is important to dry all damp areas. Silverfish thrive in dark and damp locations so you will often find them in bathrooms, under sinks, in the basement, etc. If there is any moisture, use a towel to dry these areas.

  2. Step 2

The next step for silverfish control is to run a dehumidifier. If there are any rooms that are particularly moist, this will help to dry out the location and make the environment less inviting to the silverfish bugs.

  3. Step 3

Vacuum your home and clean up all possible hiding places. Silverfish will hide in dark places so if you have a pile of papers on the floor, make sure to pick it up and shake it out while vacuuming.

  4. Step 4

Then you will want to use either boric acid or diatomaceous earth to sprinkle throughout the home. These are both great silverfish control agents which work by getting under the exoskeleton of the silverfish and causing the insects to die. You will want to sprinkle one of these powders along all base boards, inside cracks, crevices, behind book cases, etc. to remove the silverfish infestation.

Tips & Warnings
  • When applying any silverfish control (i.e. diatomaceous earth) inside your home, it is important to keep children and pets away from these areas.
  • Vacuum often and keep your home tidy to reduce the chances of a silverfish re-infestation.
