Herbal bitters have a variety of uses. Most of us assume that they are used primarily for medicine; however, they are also used commercially in things like soft drinks and other products. They are a staple ingredient in cocktails as well. One popular formula is called Angostura bitters and is a must-have for bartenders. Swedish bitters is another famous formula.

Did know that you can make these bitter formulations yourself? You can use it in small amounts to help aid in digestion. You can also use it in your favorite cocktail recipes that call for bitters.

Here is how.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 tsp. gentian
  • 1 cup chopped, fresh orange peels
  • 1/2 stick cinnamon, crushed
  • Chopstick
  • 1-quart Mason jar
  • Vodka
  1. Step 1

Clean the Mason jar. I usually run it through the dishwasher to do this. Make sure to dry it out thoroughly.

  2. Step 2

Add gentian, orange peels and cinnamon to the Mason jar.

  3. Step 3

Pour vodka into the Mason jar and poke it slightly with a chopstick to release air bubbles.

  4. Step 4

Cover with a new Mason jar lid and store in a cool, dry place for 4 weeks. Test the formula; if it isn't bitter enough, add 1/2 tsp. more gentian and let it sit for another 2 weeks or so.

Tips & Warnings
  • A little gentian goes a long way.
  • Use this formula in small amounts in cocktails and take before meals to aid in digestion.
  • Consult with a doctor to make sure these herbs are OK for you to take.
