Things You'll Need:
- Watching
- Care
- Facial cleansers
- Testing
-
Step 1
For dry to normal skin, go for something creamy. Super creamy if you have dry skin. This will keep it well moisturized and baby-butt smooth. Cetaphil is a popular favorite, and for good reason. It’s a word-of-mouth favorite that even dermatologists love and it’s affordable.
-
Step 2
For very dry skin, find a cleanser with oatmeal. It’s very soothing.
-
Step 3
If you have oily skin, you probably didn’t need a test to tell you. I sure don’t. So what do us grease monkeys use? Avoid creamy cleansers. Gels are a better option as they absorb oil. Just make sure your cleanser doesn’t go too far. If you dry your face out, your skin will react and produce oil in a vengeance. Neutrogena is a good place to start for those of us with oily skin.
-
Step 4
Oily skin often brings acne in tow. I’ve been there and bought that t-shirt. Go for something gentle so you don’t irritate your skin further. A cleanser with a low amount of salicylic acid will help control the acne without beating up your skin. Neutrogena - again - has a number of good options.
-
Step 5
A cleanser with a gentle exfoliant is ideal if your oily skin has led to clogged pores. Exfoliants for clogged and acne-prone skin are also available. St. Ives Swiss Formula works nicely and is affordable. You don’t need to glop it on. A little goes a long way.
-
Step 6
For those with sensitive skin, go for something with no perfumes. Olay, Neutrogena and Cetaphil offer good choices. You might have to experiment before you find something that works, so be ready to gift your cleansers to friends with hardier skin. I also wear a gentle sun-block as an added measure.
-
Step 7
Do you wish that “combo” meant a hamburger with fries and a drink rather than skin with an identity crisis? If your forehead, nose and chin are oily but other parts of your face feel tight after you clean them, then you have combination skin. Gentle is the only way to go. Try something with oatmeal in it. It’ll be good for the oily patches without drying out anything else.
