Being in debt is not only a financial problem, but it can be a source of incredible stress as well. It can affect your whole life. But it’s possible to work your way out of debt, and stay out for good.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stop using credit cards. This is the very first thing you need to do if you use credit cards and you have a debt problem. Cancel any credit cards you might still be using, and don’t apply for any new ones, which will just start the same cycle over again.

  2. Step 2

Create a plan to start paying off all of your unpaid bills and debts. You can try to get your debts consolidated so you can make one payment a month for all of your bills, or try another of various methods to pay off your debt. You can make a simple plan of paying off your bills one at a time, from smallest to largest, or pay off bills with the highest interest rates first.

  3. Step 3

Save for an emergency fund. Make sure you create a hedge against getting into debt again.

  4. Step 4

Live within your means. Save up money for larger purchases. Keep your expenses less than your income, and you will be able to save for your emergency fund, and be less likely to get back into the debt cycle again.
