How to Write a Letter of Resignation For A Job You Hate

Keep the resignation letter professional even if you can't wait to get out the door.

Even if you have the world's worst boss and the world's worst job, the best formula for writing a resignation letter is brief and professional. Keep the letter positive -- resignation letters are often put in a personnel file and may be referred to if a potential employer calls your old boss looking for a reference. Employers don't want to hire someone who is negative.

Instructions

1. Format the letter in a business style and address your direct supervisor in a friendly manner, using his first name. Include your forwarding address at the top of the letter so that your soon-to-be former employer may contact you. Provide a copy of the letter for the human resources department.

2. Start the body of the letter with a clear statement that you are resigning along with the date of your resignation. Indicate your last day of work.

3. Express your gratitude for the opportunity. Mention a few things you contributed to the organization to keep the letter brief and positive.

4. Close the letter by thanking your supervisor and indicate that you plan to help with the transition all you can in your last days.

5. Close the letter with "Sincerely," your signature and printed name. You should also keep a copy of your signed letter for yourself.

Tips & Warnings

• Give your company at least two weeks notice.

• Don't go into painful detail explaining your departure. A quick explanation such as finding a new opportunity focuses on the positive.

• Although it may be difficult, don't write anything negative about your boss, the company or other employees. Avoid blaming others for your resignation.
