Things You'll Need:
- Plastic Wrap or
- Plastic Bags or
- Refrigerator Containers
-
Step 1
Meats packaged by the butcher or grocer are wrapped for protection and freshness, but not always securely. Juices can leak out. And we all know that these juices can convey bacteria.
When you bring home packaged meat, before placing it into the refrigerator, slip the meat, package and all, into a large re-sealable bag. This will keep any leakage from dripping out onto your refrigerator shelves. -
Step 2
Alternatively, remove the meat from its packaging and re-wrap or package it in a fresh bag or container. *Throw away the grocer’s packaging at once.
-
Step 3
Store all meats separately to avoid cross contamination.
Do not put chicken, beef, bacon, for example into the same refrigerator container. Some meats, like chicken, are more susceptible to the accumulation of bacteria. -
Step 4
Packaging that may leak meat juices into the refrigerator can drip down onto other foods or onto lower shelves.
Store any meat packages on the lowest shelf of your refrigerator, or inside a refrigerator drawer containing only meat.
This will at least localize any contamination that may occur, keeping other foods and surfaces clean, and allowing for easier cleanup of any spills or drips. -
Step 5
When leaks or drips do occur, clean any shelves or refrigerator drawers at once.
Use an antibacterial cleanser, vinegar or bleach.
