Care for Traditonal African Head-ties

For a long time, I couldn't figure out how to clean out my native head-ties(gele) after an occasion: they are usually stained by make-up after a special event because they sit on your face for hours.

Anyway, I started looking and asking around form family and friends who had been in the "gele-tying" business since forever(I just started wearing it last year!)

I finally found some valuable tips and have decided to share my little knowledge.

It might not be the only way to do this but I am sure it will help someone who is like me(not into this gele thing :))

Instructions

    • 1

This section will be focusing on how to clean out the make-up and sweat stains that are usually left on your elaborate head gear after a night of partying :)

    • 2

For spot cleaning on smudges or stains that are not too much, wipe off with a mild soap and a wet sponge.

    • 3

For detailed cleaning or full wash, hand washing is highly recommended again. Soak and wash in warm soapy water.

    • 4

Hang to dry; best way would be with clippy hangers so it can be hung straight. Try to straigthen wrinkles and creases while it's still wet.

    • 5

Ironing is generally not recommended for these but using your judgment since there are some plain head-ties that could be ironed on the inside.

Tips & Warnings

  • If metallic, do NOT iron.
