1
Access the Federal Bureau of Investigation Crimes Against Children - National Sex Offender public website. At the site, you can use interactive tools to locate registered sex offenders anywhere in the United States.
-
2
Click on the link to your particular state. You will be redirected to your own state-specific sex offender registry. The U.S. Justice Department currently is working on a single comprehensive national database. Once online, that database will be found at the FBI National Sex Offender homepage in place of the current state-by-state resource.
-
-
3
Select a search option that is most useful to you. For example, you can search for offenders by type of sex crime, name of offender or location. If you are most interested in finding a child molester in your neighborhood, the map function is most effective.
-
4
Type in your street address, city and zip code into the map search. A map of your neighborhood will appear with flags noting the specific locations of registered sex offenders in your area.
-
5
Click on a flag to access specific information about an individual offender. Typically, this information includes the name of the offender, his address, age and the specific crime he was convicted of. There likely will be a photo of the offender as well.
-
6
Contact your local police department if you lack Internet access. The police department maintains a registry of child molesters in your neighborhood, and will supply this list upon request. You can ask for this information by phone, through the mail or by going to the police department in person.

Tips & Warnings
In addition to the government directory of registered sex offenders, there are other private services that maintain this information as well.
A number of sex offenders break additional laws by failing to register. Therefore, while the registered sex offender system provides a useful tool to identify sex offenders in your neighborhood, it is not necessarily a complete or comprehensive list.
